dARTa
Background

Lumec, through its initiative ‘dARTa’, received funding from the South African Cities Network as part of a call to identify Integrated Urban Development Framework (IUDF) demonstrator projects. The purpose of the funding call is to provide seed funding support to local organisations (public, private or civic) that illustrate diverse creative, grounded initiatives that work with communities towards actualising the outcomes of the IUDF.  dARTa is a data and art initiative that brings data geeks and creatives together with the goal of portraying important data in a way that appeals to the public – to touch, hear and feel data that matters. This third instalment of dARTa is titled the ‘dARTa Glenwood Neighbourhood Creative Project’.

The dARTa Glenwood Neighbourhood Creative Project

This project is a collaboration between Lumec, the KZNSA Gallery, and a local creatives, Portia Ncwane, Kenneth Ndumiso and Steve Jones. The dARTa team have proposed a project that seeks to identify the challenges that are being faced by those who either live/work/play or just visit the Glenwood Neighbourhood, and to develop a creative response to a shared challenge. This creative response will allow the team to gain a deeper, more nuanced understanding of the shared challenge being faced, and identify approaches to engage with citizens, the municipality, and other important stakeholders. Ultimately, the outcome of this project is to provide a framework for how government can leverage similar creative approaches to engage with local communities, and do more community-driven planning and development. This is aligned to National Government’s IUDF, and seeks to identify ways to better address the levers of the IUDF: “Empowered Active Communities” and “Effective Urban Governance.”

Project phases

The project will run from May 2021 – July 2021. Phase 1 of the project is being done during May, and comprises of data collection through a short survey questionnaire (please click this link to do the 2-min survey) in order to capture the main challenges being experienced by those who live and work, or just visit the Glenwood area. This data will be analysed, and used to inform Phase 2 which starts in June. Phase 2 entails selecting a challenge that will become the focus of the project, and through team and broader community engagements, developing a creative response to this challenge. This will inform Phase 3, which will involve pulling together key stakeholders including the community, local municipality, UIP, academic institutions, and other interested stakeholders, in order to engage around the outcomes of Phase 2 in an attempt to develop a framework that could be replicated in other areas.

LUMEC, through a series of surveys and best practice analysis, undertook a study to assess the current business model of  KwaZulu-Natal Society (KZNSA) and conducted a high level socio-economic impact assessment to establish KZNSA's impact on the local creative industry.

LUMEC was appointed to gather in-depth data and knowledge on audience trends of the South African and KwaZulu-Natal film industry consumer in order to provide recommendations to the KZNFC towards growing film audiences in the Province of KwaZulu-Natal. This research was thereafter translated into an 6 minute animated video with key research findings.



November 15, 20170

LUMEC undertook an assessment of the I Heart Market in Durban in order to determine the impact that the market has had on traders, their development, turnover, supply chains, and employment. The assessment will assist the market owner to gain further support to grow the market and the SMMEs that it supports.

LUMEC undertook an impact assessment for DBNxFST, an extreme sports festival hosted on the Durban beachfront every year. Information was sourced from the event organisers and sponsors, and surveys were undertaken with spectators and participants in order to gauge the impact that the festival has on Durban as well as the perception of spectators, participants, and sponsors.
